Synopsis

CLAUDIA was produced by ReWired FILMS and followed Claudia Diesti for a period of three days at GENERATIONS Salon in West Palm Beach, FL. Phil Stone from ReWiredHair.com directed the filming. Claudia creates four "looks" on four models, followed by a photoshoot. The viewer experiences Claudia's ambidextrious haircutting methods and creative color techniques. While the viewer is watching this, Claudia tells her story from when she was a little girl, to the present, and the hardships and triumphs she endured, along with advice for new female hairdressers. Jo Blackwell, L'Oreal portfolio artist, adds insight into the business and lends support to Claudia's dialogue. Cameo appearances from Joseph Kellner (the Real Hair Truth) and Gil Levin (Claudia's beauty school owner). Claudia is an all encompassing film on an individual artist and digs deep into what makes that artist so great.

Colombian born hairstylist, Claudia Diesti, built her reputation on education and not ego as she traveled across the globe, AND has worked alongside great colorists all across the US, Canada, Europe and Asia.

Claudia’s specialty is the popular French coloring techniques of Balayage (freehand coloring) and Ombre (a graduated dark to light ends). Claudia is an American Board Certified Colorist; one of just a few artists in the US trained in the complete ambidextrous VERN cutting system and was specially educated by the Artego Color Company in Balayage and Ombre.

Claudia’s work has been featured in Salon Today, Modern Salon, American Salon, Miami 944, D’ Latinos, Trendy, Venue, Wellington the Magazine, Vive, New You, MTV Germany and the Lifetime Channel’s morning TV show “The Balancing Act”. In 2009 she interviewed for the highly successful documentary The Real Hair Truth which led the way for an educational biography (CLAUDIA the Film) about her early life in South America, surviving domestic abuse, coming to America, and her fast rise in the beauty industry as one of today’s top stylists. Claudia has also created runway looks for designers such as Escada, Nicky Hilton, LaPerla, Zac Posen, Custo Barcelona and many others.

Phil Stone never really wanted to do hair. Instead, for several years, Phil lived as a starving artist in the underground comic book industry as an illustrator. He illustrated graphic comic books that were not only rejected by the editor, but absolutely abhorred by the distributor. After nearly eight years of becoming infamous through police records and overdue bar tabs across the country, Phil reluctantly crawled out of his hole of an apartment and attended a hair show in Detroit with his mother, who is still a stylist today.

Phil discovered Irvin Rusk on stage and was entranced by the way the hair fabric was manipulated into a three-dimensional animated form. Inspired by the creation of living, breathing art, Phil decided that day he was going to be a stylist. For two years, Phil went through a rigorous apprenticeship under his mother and long-time friend, quitting every Friday out of frustration, and coming back to the training every Tuesday out of determination to succeed. It was a long two years. Six months before graduation, Phil went through his RUSK training and became a RUSK Designer. It was exactly what he was looking for. To Phil, RUSK was like Andy Warhol's Factory on a global scale.

A sharing of ideas and opinions to achieve a certain goal through art. Being the gung-ho manic depressive artist that Phil is, spiced up with ADHD, Phil dedicated himself not only to RUSK, but also to his salon and the Detroit fashion scene (if there really was one). Doing hair for local fashion designers for runway events, photo shoots, and fine art photography allowed Phil to express himself relentlessly. Within two years, Phil had worked at two salons and then built his own, only to close it a year later after becoming a full-time Education Manager and full-time International Guest Artist for RUSK.

For several years thereafter, Phil traveled the world on a full-time basis to far away places like London, Dubai, Paris, Australia, Toronto, and Paducah, Kentucky. Phil also became a New York fashion week stylist for four years, styling hair for designers such as B Michael, Sabayashi, Obedient Sons, Buckler, and Nicholai, to name a few. Tired of the snobbery and ego-maniacal facades, Phil went into doing the hair for the people he really loved, playmates for Playboy.tv, and Maxim Hometown Hotties.

Phil has always, and still does, believe in the grass-roots policy of RUSK: To not only do a fantastic haircut, but also have the passion to share it with others. Like Jackson Pollock, Phil stumbled upon his medium of expression through circumstance and found true artistic success through hair.

The fear of being stagnant and artistically dead motivates Phil to continue learning and discovering new ways to express himself through hair.

As you watch Phil Stone's documentary film CLAUDIA you might feel as though you are peaking inside a window into the private life of a remarkable self accomplished woman, who happens to also be a very beautiful person. It is a documentary film about dedication, perseverance and determination, bravery strength and survival. It is a sweet film yet at the same time delivers strong messages on a variety of topics. Following the storyline of CLAUDIA is easy to do, but I think it's important be open to recognizing each valid message the film delivers. It's easy to get to the end of the film before realizing the complexity of the film.

Aside from the powerful messages the film subtly delivers, Claudia the woman is a gracefully nurturing artist and observing Claudia create her beautiful magic is engaging. Equally, hearing her melodic voice you can't help but listen to every word she has to say.

CLAUDIA is a wonderful film for aspiring stylists and proves achievement along with great results are able attainable with good ethics, hard work, and not being afraid of it. Claudia gives pride and prestige to the hair and beauty industry.

CLAUDIA is also a film I would highly recommend for domestic abuse and violence survivors, as Claudia's survival instincts and courage, mixed with her passion to live a healthy balanced life of quality and peace has taken her to the ends of the earth while recreating a life built of her own dreams, gradually cultivating an existence surrounded by people who love and adore her who are supportive positive influences, and professionals globally who respect and admire her work. I believe many people will be able to realistically relate to Claudia's genuine honesty from different aspects on various levels and will undoubtedly be touched by Claudia's journey through her struggles, hopes and dreams, to her honorable integrity and achievements. I know I was.
