Mayan cosmology is of a simple but very profound nature. It deals with radial as opposed to linear mathematics and qualitative as opposed to quantitative numerical expression. These concepts directly correlate to how the Maya understood the passage of time. Nowadays, time is viewed as a linear notion ruled by the clock. Consequently, the nature of time has eluded modern science for centuries. Now, this ancient Mayan knowledge has resurfaced in the form of a renewed emerging chronometric science.
Tzolkin in C Major was conceived and realized through aesthetic and mathematical discoveries based on an ancient Mayan calendar cycle and timing frequency. It was the composer’s intention to present a work that is scientifically based on this cycle. The frequency, better known as a ratio (13:20), is represented by two smaller cycles, which musically generate a simple and elegant harmonic progression of 260 consecutive harmonies. This reveals a music with an air of spatial continuity, which supports the meditative aspects of music for orchestra and audience alike. Therefore, the work is intended as a cultural study in meditation, whereby the participation of the audience is encouraged and appreciated.
The project encompasses several levels; primarily, it is a cycle of 260 consecutive musical harmonies that are performed by a full 90-piece orchestra in the span of 20 minutes, which includes a digital slide show of an artistic rendering of 260 Maya hieroglyphs central to the calendar and synchronized to the composition.
Ultimately, the project is a cultural study in meditative unity whereby the energetic, conscious and collective participation of the audience is integral to the experiment. This orchestral meditation approach is unconventional in conception and form, yet musically classical in its instrumental arrangement. The purpose of the experiment is to impart ancient knowledge on the nature of time in a meditative multi-media fashion while simultaneously creating public awareness.
This first edition DVD is the only one of its kind, and a monumental achievement in musical whole systems synthesis. If you want to know more about the Mayan calendar and want to experience this knowledge directly in time, then you will be amazed at the profound language of simplicity and elegance found in this artistic and scientific discovery.
