It's been two years since she graduated from NYU, and Alex Young is still living in the same city with the same boyfriend and the same job. Seeing that it's time for her to become the adult that college had originally promised to make her, Alex joins the ranks of millions of today's young adults--'The Boomerang Generation'--by packing up and moving back home.
Home, however, is no longer what it used to be. Abandoned by her mother, her father now lives in a new city filled with young adults like her, floating through their lives at a coffeehouse, terrified to expose and act on their talents and desires. Feeling the same sense of panic and depression they all possess, Alex abandons her personal promises for their world of cheap thrills, pseudo-romances, dead-end jobs, and never-ending weekends on daddy's dime. This subculture engulfs her to the point where she would rather jump out of a plane than go out on a limb.
With all play and no school, Alex must learn the hard way that a change of scenery is not enough, and that true change can only come from fully committing herself to the aspirations inside of her.
This very personal and touching self-critique of “The Boomerang Generation” is about the essence of “Commitment.” Writer-Director Will Clegg uses his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina to show how today’s twenty-somethings face two choices: commit to your passions, or resign yourself to perpetual childhood for the rest of your life.
Hard to watch at times because it was so painfully realistic -- about the period in your life between being "in the nest" and then flying out on your own. Beautiful shots and great lead actors. A story where growing pains eventually lead to hopefulness. Loved it. ~ C.J.
